It’s just two minutes’ walk from the centre of town, where, in addition to many secondhand bookshops, there’s a wide choice of shops, an excellent delicatessen, a good old-fashioned greengrocers, two good quality butchers shops and a choice of cafés, restaurants and pubs.
There’s so much to do in and around Hay that there’s no need to travel further afield, but, should you want to, it’s within easy reach of the Brecon Beacons, the city of Hereford where the Mappa Mundi is on display in the cathedral, the Elan Valley, and the wild, unspoilt countryside of Radnorshire.
